Service manuals come in a variety of contents. Some service manuals are complete repair manuals, which can include rebuilding instructions and removal and installation procedures.
Moreover, some are specific to a given component, primarily on how to remove, inspect, and install components.
On the other hand, some include troubleshooting, and some don’t.
In other words, service manuals can be created using all the tools to make them interactive with troubleshooting and other manuals or interactive electronic technical publications IETP, like linking to each other and to other publications.
Service manuals most always, depending on the manual standards, include exploded views of the component(s), flow diagrams of the component(s), and views with callouts to identify components and their location.
XML and other technical writing tools and standards are used to create the manuals. This gives the ability to add the metadata to be able to link and reuse the information multiple times in other publications for the same product, like Operation and Maintenance Manuals, Installation Instructions, Owners Manuals, Parts Manuals, etc.
Smart Graphic Manuals
With the use of smart graphics, service manuals are more useful. Service manuals normally provide the most information about a product within one manual. Service manuals are used in the aerospace, agricultural, automotive, electric vehicle, marine, HVAC, and medical industries.
These service manuals are provided by manufacturers and cover the servicing, maintenance, and repair of their products. They are not designed for the general public; however, they are created by manufacturers for use at their OEM dealerships. Manufacturers have a team of technical engineers, writers, and illustrators who compile information for these service manuals.
Manuals have seen the implementation of digitalization over the years. Service manuals are generally the only source of information for manufacturers’ labor time guides. These are times generated through labor time studies used in warranty operations.

For vehicles, the following content is usually covered: body, frame & mounting, engine, suspension, driveline, brake systems, transmission/transaxle, clutch, chains, exhaust, fuel, steering, shocks, climate control, instrumentation and Warnings Systems, battery & charging systems, audio, lighting, electrical distribution, and wiring.
