Technical communicators may put the information they capture into paper documents, web pages, computer-based training, digitally stored text, audio, video, and other media. The Society for Technical Communication defines the field as any form of communication that focuses on technical or specialized topics, communicates specifically using technology, or provides instructions on how to do something.

Scientific and Technical Communicators

More succinctly, the Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators defines technical communication as factual communication, usually about products and services. Whatever the definition of technical communication, the overarching goal of the practice is to create easily accessible information for a specific audience. A technical publication can be a small leaflet to a thick volume of hundreds of pages of maintenance guidelines, installation and removal procedures, and lists of application-specific tools.

Technical Publication Industries

Technical publications can be found in every industry. Industrial, scientific, medical, marine, military, generator set and electrical industries are just a few examples. These can require technical publications such as service manuals, operation and maintenance manuals, owner manuals, fault code troubleshooting manuals, master repair manuals, wiring diagrams, service bulletins, technical service bulletins, interactive wiring diagrams, and installation instructions.

Explaining Complex Processes

A technical publication explains complex processes to an end user who may or may not be familiar with a product, guideline, or specification.
